The old Naxxar primary school is being rebuilt into a modern, purpose built facility. The new school will offer 46 classrooms, including 20 for kindergarten, serving around 1,000 children, alongside specialist rooms for art, music, drama, and an industrial kitchen. It will also feature sports facilities, recreational spaces, a multi sensory room, a multipurpose hall, a community accessible library, and a rooftop garden where students can learn to care for plants and trees.
Three of the original façades are being preserved for their architectural value and integrated into the new five storey building (two floors underground, three above street level), blending heritage design with contemporary materials. The project also includes energy efficiency measures such as photovoltaic panels, spread across roughly 13,000 m² of built and open space.
The estimated cost of the project is €21.5 million.
EU funding: This project is co funded by the European Union under the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), through the project "ERDF.03.280: Enhancing educational facilities in Naxxar through the construction and setting up of a new primary school."
On Wednesday 19th August, Claudine Camilleri, Deputy Head of Representation, and Marianne Grima, Economic Counsellor, from the European Commission Representation in Malta visited the site to see the progress of the works.
What is the ERDF? The European Regional Development Fund provides funding to public and private bodies in all EU regions to reduce economic, social and territorial disparities, supporting investments through dedicated national or regional programmes. In Malta, ERDF investment supports projects that make communities more competitive, greener, and more inclusive, of which better educational infrastructure, like the new Naxxar school, is a clear example.
